Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer rubber. Mainly divided into polyester type and polyether type, it has a wide hardness range (60HA-85HD), wear resistance, oil resistance, transparency, and good elasticity. It is widely used in daily necessities, sports goods, toys, decorative materials, and other fields. Halogen-free flame-retardant TPU can also replace soft PVC to meet the increasing environmental requirements in various industries.

Elastomers refer to polymer materials with a glass transition temperature below room temperature, an elongation at break >50%, and good recovery after the removal of external force.

Polyurethane elastomer is a special category among elastomers. It has a wide range of hardness and performance, making it a polymer material between rubber and plastic. It can be thermally plasticized, with little or no chemical cross-linking in its structure. Its molecules are essentially linear but exhibit certain physical cross-linking. This type of polyurethane is called TPU.


Introduction to the Properties of Polyurethane and Polyurethane Rubber

Polyurethane is polymerized from polyester (or polyether) and diisocyanate compounds. It offers excellent wear resistance, good elasticity, high hardness, oil resistance, and solvent resistance. Whether polyurethane is classified as plastic or rubber depends on the specific situation. In regions like Taiwan and Hong Kong, plastic is generally referred to as "plastic," so strictly distinguishing between plastic and rubber is not particularly meaningful. The theoretical distinction between plastic and rubber is typically based on whether the material's glass transition temperature (Tg) is above or below room temperature. Polymers with a Tg below room temperature are usually called plastics (e.g., polyethylene with a Tg of -78°C), while those with a Tg above room temperature are called rubber. Polyurethane is a unique polymer composed of hard and soft segments. The hard segments have a low Tg, exhibiting plastic characteristics, while the soft segments have a Tg well above room temperature, exhibiting rubber characteristics. During the synthesis of polyurethane, the ratio of hard to soft segments can be adjusted by controlling the polymerization process, allowing polyurethane to behave either as a plastic or a rubber. Polyurethane rubber (U) is a product of the reaction between oligomer polyols (such as polyether diol, polyester diol, or polyolefin diol, as well as phosphorus-, chlorine-, or fluorine-containing polyether diols), polyisocyanates, and chain extenders in the presence of a catalyst. Depending on the raw materials used, polyurethane rubber can be divided into two main types: polyester-type polyurethane rubber (AU) and polyether-type polyurethane rubber (EU). The structural characteristics of polyurethane rubber molecules not only endow it with valuable comprehensive physical and mechanical properties but also allow for the adjustment of its elasticity, cold resistance, modulus, hardness, and mechanical strength by varying the components, molecular weight, and ester ratio of the raw materials.
